| all about motors! RC version (article by: INUYASHA532290) caution: beware of nosebleeds while reading!Termonology
Brush:A small rectangular piece of conductive metal that makes contact with the commutator inside an electric motor. Commutator/Comm:The top part of the armature. Typically referred to as the Comm. The comm takes the current the brushes. Wind:Is the coils of copper wider wound areound Can:The Metal enclosure that houses the Armature and the Magnets. Endbell:Is the end of the motor that has the terminals for connecting the wires and connects the brushes to the comm. Armature:Is the spinning part of an electric motor, Also known as the arm.
This is just the basics of the motor, think of it as a dictionary for the terms I will use.
Motor Wind
to coil or twine about something-Dictionary.com
This is the part of the motor that determines
Speed (RPM) Torque Power consumption
The amount of winds "Turns" Defines all the above. The lower the turn the higher the RPM will be but you torque will greatly suffer, with these lower turns the motor coils will be thicker and have more power consumption.
Here is a photo of a armature. This motor is a "High Turn" motor the more turns the motor is the higher overall torque and acceleration will be, but your speed will dramatically decrease, your "run" time will also suffer.
Wind Numbers
"A single has less wire area wound on to the arm and because of that it will weigh less and have faster acceleration, but generate less overall power. A double uses smaller gauge wire and more wire area ( circular mills) can be stuffed onto the arm, but the more copper the more it weighs and the slower the spool up but the more overall power the motor will make." - "Maverick Racer" From forums.radiocontrolzone.com/
There are basically 2 types of winds double wind, and single wind. you generally only need to know this if you have the intent on winding or modifying your own motor.
Winding Methods
There are only 2 methods of winding a motor. Hand Wound Machine wound
Hand Wound
A hand wound motor is exactly what it sounds like. The windings on the armature have been wound by an actual person, not a machine. This allows for a much neater, and tighter, set of windings. Tighter windings fall back to basic physics lessons. As the windings get closer to the center of the armature, the armature takes less effort to spin. Also tighter windings mean that less wire is used around the armature overall. This leads to less resistance and better efficiency.
A hand wound motor will perform much better than a machine wound motor. In most cases it can also be geared slightly higher as well. The downside to a hand wound motor is their cost, which is usually quite a bit more than a machine wound motor. -Misbehavin' RC
Machine Wound
A machine wound motor is one that has had it's armature windings wound by a machine. Production line methods allow for the final cost of the motor to be cheaper, but with less overall power than a hand wound motor.
This is pretty much the end of winding, there is much more but I dont thnk many people are going to re-wind their motors.
Brushes
There are many variations of brushes, but in airsoft there is only one, the "laydown" style.
Here is an example of the "laydown" style brushesThe material that make=up the brushes is generally copper but there are silver and gold brushes. Here is a silver brush set from "Team Trinity" These are R/C Motor brushes and cannot be Modified by the average person to fit Airsoft specific motors correctly! Motor springs
This is Easy, right?
The springs job is to push the brushes to the commutator to spin the motor, However!, if the correct amount of force is not applied (too little or too much) it can ruin your comm, and permanently damage your motors armature. This is a photo of the standard motor brushes, they are for R/C but they are the exact type used on airsoft motors, just slightly bigger. You can edit your springs just by bending them, but its necessary to have a gauge. The Commutator This is one of the most important parts of the motor, it sends current to the coils to generate rotational force, and the most likely part to be damaged if neglected. The commutator will become black after some use,(from the brush dust, etc.) so its a good idea to pull the armature from the motor and use some fine (1000) grit sandpaper to polish it. what I do is: use a drill to spin the armature and lightly sand it, until the black is gone. Then use a toothbrush to clean the crevices of the commutator to prevent it from shorting out. Magnets!
Now to the fun part, The magnets.
In A brushed motor there are 3 basic types of magnets.
Wet Magnets Dry Magnets Neodynium Iron Boron Colbalt Magnets -(The most fun!)
Wet magnets vs. Dry magnets
The main reason between these magnets is the manufacturing process at which they are made.
"Wet" Magnets: These magnets are made from a Ferrite paste that is pressed into a mold and set in a oven They generally have more power than "dry" magnets, but thay are very fragile compared to dry magnets.
"Dry" Magnets: These magnets are formed from a mold similar to "Wet" magnets but they are pressed from a dry Ferrite powder, They are less powerful than "Wet" magnets but much more durable.
Neo Magnets!
These are the most powerful type of magnets
They outperform every magnet to date, they can lift up fo 3000 times its own weight! The magnets come in many different mixtures but the base metals remain the same.
Iron Neodymium Colbalt Boron
With the correct ammount of each element, they can make magnets so powerful, enough to drive a nail through your hand in a split second, if you are not careful!
Here is a picture of some Neo magnetsThey are extremely Fragile! it breaks easily under its own acceleration from one magnet to another, so they plate then in nickel, plastic or rubber in case of an accident. This pretty much concludes this article. Thank's for viewin hope you got somethin out of it!!!!!ayuyahhhhhhh!!!!!
